Vinicio Capossela

Born in 1965 in Hannover to Italian immigrant parents originally from Naples, Vinicio Capossela returned to Italy to study piano. His first album, All’una e trentacinque circa was, in his own words, “a nocturnal album of melancholic ballads and violent rushes of euphoria”. It won the prestigious Tenco prize in 1990 for best album. Vinicio’s music soon moved on to manifest other aesthetic influences which were to remain omnipresent in his work: film and literature (John Fante, Charlie Chaplin, Dickens, Buster Keaton…). His songs are often daring fusions – a ‘Moscow rave-waltz’, an anachronistic cha cha cha, a tarantella with batucada beats, a reading of an ode to the shipwrecked accompanied by a cello/theremin duet…Collaborations include ska trumpet king Roy Paci, Goran Bregovic, Kocani Orkestar and regular special guest Marc Ribot.

Vinicio writes dreamy compositions with finely wrought lyrics. His astonishing imagination has a particularly European feel to it, and his universe is gracefully monstrous, revealing a complex personality with a singularly visual sense. Vinicio Capossela’s music and lyrics conjure up some very powerful images. Creator of his own personal universe, he has become an icon for a generation of Italian bohemian youths, who find in his music the synthesis of passions which are sometimes contradictory and always highly colourful.
